The Duchannes family is family of Casters that goes back for more than a century. The Duchannes are cursed because of Genevieve Duchannes to not have free will in the claiming process meaning they can't choose whether they are Light or Dark, the Book of Moons chooses for them. Lena Duchannes is the only one of the Duchannes to actually have a choice in the Claiming. It is tradition for the Duchannes women to keep their last names. Duchannes women also don't know their real names until after they are Claimed.
