DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) is an influential, religion and nationalism-driven association of women in the town of Gatlin. In order to be a part of the association, one needs to have at least one ancestor that fought in the American Civil War, on the side of the Confederacy.
Daughters of the American Revolution controls the cultural aspect of Gatlin, such as managing the list of forbidden books within the town, and commanding the schools. As a proof of their superiority of the Gatlin county, the president of DAR, Mrs. Lincoln, managed to turn the whole school against Lena Duchannes due to her heritage.
